I had to reformat my Dell Inspiron E1505 and it is all back to normal except
for one thing - When I used to hit the mute button or the volume button on
the front edge, there used to be a slider for volume and an icon that showed
whether the volume was muted. Anybody know how to get that back without
re-installing all the drivers?

Check the CD's that came with it. You most likely need to install a
driver... Look at the Device Manager for any yellow "?" or red "!"...

Try this:
Start -> Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Click the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" checkbox
This is on my work PC, an Optiplex GX280 desktop running XP Pro.
There is an applet that comes with recent Inpirons that responds to the
special media buttons on the front of the computer. It will briefly show
hroizontal sliders for volume adjustment (and horizontal sliders for
brightness adjestment). It is called QuickSet.
