I have not found anything on Vista any better than W-Xp.
Several thngs are worse..
Speed
>>> I see no speed difference
Xp Power Toys gone.
>>> What are you trying to do? I've found many functions are
incorporated into vista
Inferior Photo editing programs.

Avast and AVG iffy..
AVG is rock solid. Haven't tried Avast, but haven't heard any
complaints.
All day required for installation.
>>> About 55 minutes, including two installs so I could do a clean
install with an upgrade disk. All day? How could that even be
possible?
I'll check out the battery situation and report back..
>>> Haven't put it on a laptop yet. Good idea. I'll try that next.

I've found power management options in the GUI to be an adventure.
Set incorrectly, I was able to place my desktop into a coma when attempting
to simply set monitor sleep.
Power off and power up.
Until I tried different (convoluted) settings. I find it hard to believe
that the Intel 875 chipset with a Radeon 9700 Pro isn't mainstream hardware
for the new OS.
