Default Vista Reverts to Lower Resolution When Coming Out of Sleep

I've got a new (refurb'd) VistaHP Inspiron 1420 laptop, 1280 x 800
resolution. Whenever I close the cover, it goes into sleep. When I
open the cover, it's in a lower resolution, 1024. I have to keep
resetting it.

I remember someone on this group had this problem, and I don't think
he ever figured out how to resolve it.

Anyone know if there's a fix? It seems to be common on google.

Thanks.

Send it back as not fit for purpose.

Vista is broken, despite 18 months of "fixes"

(should that read "fuxxors" ?)

Hi!

My immediate reaction is take the machine back to XP or another OS. After
that, try the same thing. Does it still fail? If it does, it's probably a
problem with the hardware.

But since that isn't an option for everyone, here are some things to check
out:

1. What kind of video system do you have?
2. Do you have the absolute latest drivers? (Not the latest that Dell
provides--the latest available from the video chipset manufacturer...)
3. Do you have Vista SP1 or not?
4. Do you have the latest Dell BIOS for your system?

William

I have Vista Home Premium on an I1420 and do not have this problem. It
is a video driver problem. Try the latest driver on Dell's site. If
they don't work, try going backwards from there. I recall the problem
and believe one version should fix it.

Hi,

1. integrated Intel Mobile 965 Express Chipset Family
2. The current driver is 7.14.10.1322, 8/24/07, which the Windows
Update Driver applet also finds is the most current.
The Dell site shows an older driver as more current, 7.14.10.1272,
A02, 6/28/07
Intel shows yet another driver even more current, 7.14.10.1409,
5/12/07. I may try this one, which is installed on a 1525 that I
have, and it doesn't exhibit this problem. OTOH, I may roll back, as
Tom mentions.
3. No Vista SP1. Version is 6.0.6000. I might download SP1 and
try. I'd first like to try the driver avenue, though.
4. Yes, latest for this machine is A08

Hi,

The latest version on the Dell site is older than what came installed
on this machine. Intel has a later version than what is installed,
which I'm going to try.

The video does have another problem which is probably driver related.
That is, when I launch Vista, the desktop comes up fine, but within a
second, it refreshes itself twice, buy turning black, back to desktop,
black again, and then back to desktop. All this happens very quickly.

It's a Vista bug. Search MS knowledgebase and there is a workaround for it.
Have you installed SP1 as I believe it fixes the problem.

Yikes. I just tried to install the latest driver, 7.14.10.1409,
5/12/08 (I showed "5/12/07" incorrectly, earlier), and no go. The
file from Intel was winvista_159.exe, but upon installation, I got:

"The driver being installed is not validated for this computer.
Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's
manufacturer. Set up will exit."

Validated? Does that mean that Dell hasn't tested/blessed it? Or, I
guess, it could mean that Dell has tested it, but it's not appropriate
for this machine/chipset. It is generic for the GM965 Express Chipset
Family, per Intel.

try this

Open Task Scheduler ( All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Task Scheduler)

Then go to "Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/MobilePC" .

Disable "TMM"
