My mouse settings revert back to defaults on my Vista ThinkPad. BAD
VISTA, BAD :-)

I had the video problem you have -- I think to fix it you revert back
to defaults of power schemes. If you try that and it works please
post your results here. It doesn't make sense but that's the fix that
worked for me.

Or you can check out MS's "knowledge"base article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945459

There are some utilities to quickly change your resolution back to how
you want it. Resolution Changer SX2 works for me:
http://www.stintercorp.com/rc.php

If you can't solve the problem you can at least reduce the amount of
time it takes to reset your resolution to how you want it by using
that program.

Well, I searched the MS Knowledgebase, and found lots about sleep and
hibernation problems with Vista, with individual fixes, but nothing
about resolution changes.

Vista SP1 won't show up in my Windows Update window, so I dowloaded
the full 544 MB version from the Microsoft site. I tried to install
it, but got:

Error code 0x8007000D, See http:\\go.microsoft.com\fwlink\?
LinkId=101139 for details, so I did.

This link gives five steps to take before trying again.
1) Try checking for Windows Updates again - no go
2) Check the hard disk for errors - I did, and found none
4) Run sfc - I did, and got: "Verification 100% complete. Windows
Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of
them. Details are described in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
For example C:\Windows\Log\CBS\CBS.log." But when I go there to
examine the log, I get Access Denied. I don't know how to view this
text file.
5) Run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool - I did, and found nothing

All of the above took about 3 hours.

I then disabled TMM per your advice, and haven't had the resolution
revert again. I don't know if this solved it for good, as this was
intermittent. We'll see.

I did some more googling, and found this about the TMM. Interesting.

http://ask.metafilter.com/76449/Dell...een-Resolution

I also found on theVista forums, that this problem runs across many
manufacturers, Dell, HP, Asus...some have fixed it by continuous
updating. None mentioned SP1 as THE fix, although it may be for me.
I also read that Microsoft Vista SP1 will not show up in the Windows
Update window if it determines that you have a driver that is
incompatible with SP1. Huh? It waits until you have done other
individual updates that correct the driver problem until it makes
itself available in your Windows Update Window.

Thanks for the feedback.

That's all for now.

Ah, there's that MSKB article. I couldn't find it. It does point to
TMM as the culprit, as WSZsr mentioned.

About power settings...I did set the display to come on full
brightness when on battery power. But, I don't think this is the
problem because this happens when on AC.

Yes, I remember you wrote about your resolution problem and went to
Resolution Changer SX2.

Other posts I found said that moving back to an older video driver, as
Tom suggested, will work.

I will post back about how disabling TMM is working.

That might have been me? But mine was on XP and plugged into a dock.
I've never been able to solve it and now never plug into the dock and
use sleep. So I guess I have solved it after all

Hey, WSZsr,

Looks like disabling TMM has fixed the problem. It hasn't happened
for two days. Thanks for the tip.

Trooper, I haven't checked to see if my XP laptops run TMM, but you
may want to check it out.
