Oh come on, no guts no glory right?? (g)

Yes it's marked as a 'Special Edition' for some reason. Why, I'm not sure
unless it was because it was the first Dell to run at the magic 1Ghz.

It's not my main system, but it still does run just fine. Better than me
most days.....

Bought mine back in 2000 I believe when the 1Ghz processors hit the market.
It was my first Dell and ended up costing around $4500 IIRC.

It was truly a grand system at that point in time. The magical 'gigamine'
cpu coupled with the 820 chipset and the all-wondrous RDRAM.

Hmmm.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Intel pulled these cpu's not long after they
were offered....I'm too old to remember and too lazy to google it.

Mine has a couple of small issues I haven't bothered with, but all in all is
a decent XP machine for regular use/stuff......

Maybe I'll sell it on ebay and list it as "RARE" heh heh

To get a really long WOW, why not install Vista on one of the Slot 1 Dells with
a 440BX chipset? Those old boards would handle 768MB of low density SDRAM and
an older higher voltage AGP card with a reasonable amount of memory. One could
be retro in the extreme by installing one of the very first 266MHz Pentium II
processors, or go for burning speed with a 500MHz (or even 600MHz) Slot 1
Pentium III. Talk about a prolonged WOW! Reminds me of when I was younger.

I would be almost willing to underwrite such a venture with a donation of some
of the relics that I have not yet scrapped or sold to an exporter, but only if I
could watch... Ben Myers

I have plenty of relics, hundreds, in fact (anyone want a twin 8"
bernoulli drive with 2 20mb cartridges???, Anyone?) . Lacking only
Vista.

Now we're getting somewhere. Install Vista on a Bernoulli box. Actually you
would get the same effect using one of the newer Iomega 750MB ZIP cartridges or
one of their late and lamentable Jaz drives. I'll bet that Vista's swapping
and thrashing would cause a head crash on the device within an hour... Ben

If you can find the drive, I still have a brand new box of 8" floppies...

or an RL02 pack if you have a DEC.
