Default Vista on Dell

I ordered a dell desktop that comes with Vista. Is it possible before
I activate the Vista Basic software for me to contact microsoft and
trade for an XP Home license instead. I have another similiar desktop
that has XP Home and hoping I can install using that cd but with a
different license.

Thanks,
Chris

You can call MS or Dell to verify, but I don't believe there is any
"downgrade" provision for WinVista Home Basic or Premium.

MS is likely to direct you back to Dell anyway because you have an OEM
version of the OS rather than a retail copy.

But they might field the question anyway.

Post back if you get an official answer. I believe the "downgrade" option
exists only for Vista Business and Vista Ultimate > "downgrade" to Windows
XP Pro.

Downgrades are from Vista Business or Ultimate to XP Pro only.

you physically can do it if you have a Dell labeled XP home CD, and it
will work, but legally no.
just make sure you can find all the XP drivers for it before you start.
esp the chipset, NIC, video, sound, audio, those are the common ones
that always needs extra attention.

Stew's right. The only downgrade is Vista Business and Vista Ultimate
to XP Pro.

You cannot use the license from your old machine, as that is tied to
that old machine and can't be moved.

Your only choice is to purchase a retail XP Home

You've had your answers regarding the legality of it BUT you need to make
sure all drivers are available. I have a insp1521 but noot all drivers for
XP are available and some stuff will not run properly, but put vista on and
it's fine with all drivers availble
