I gather from reading some posts, the sweet spot is 2 gigs ram but if
I wanted to just get experience w/ Vista (perhaps as a dual boot),
will it run satisfactory (not too bogged down) on 1 gig ram on a
core2duo (E1405) temporarily? Later I guess I'd upgrade to 2 gigs of
ram.

Yes sir. It will run on 1gb - but probably not to a degree where you'll
like it very much.
It won't run Aero on 1 GB with integrated graphics.

For me, Vista with 2G RAM with "features" like search indexing turned
off, runs faster than XP with 2GB RAM. I have tried this on more than
one PC.
1GB might be a different story.
Also, "Vista with its features turned off" is not equal to "Vista".
I'd like to "upgrade" my last remaining XP PC to Vista for the
performance improvement, but am keeping it on XP in case of software
compatibility issues of which there are only a few.

What happens when someone tries to run Aero on a PC with 1GB RAM and
integrated graphics? You say it won't run it -- do you really mean
that or that it won't run it well?
it just looks like regular windows, no fancy aero windows.

Strange, someone forgot to tell my wifes laptop that. She has a Gateway
laptop with 1 gig memory. She is running Vista Home Premium just fine,
including aero.

My Lenovo 3000 with integrated graphics (Intel 965?) with VHP also runs Aero
(index is 3.1 due to the integrated graphics) with either 1gb or 2gb of RAM.

Hence the word "probably".
