So I'm fooling around with Vista Ultimate on an optiplex GX270 (3.0 Ghz, 1
GB ram). Seems more than adequate for Vista except for video. That is,
Vista recognizes the onboard Intel video chipset and loads the driver and
runs the Aero interface just fine, but when I try to run the Windows DVD
Maker it tells me the video card does not meet the minimum requirements.
Apparently to use Vista's DVD maker, I need a video card that supports
directX 9, which apparently leaves out the onboard Intel chip along with my
whole pile of not-very-old Radeon 8500 and nVidia FX cards that are
otherwise perfectly fine.
So, without busting my budget and considering I do most of my buying on
eBay and surplus outlets rather than new retail, any recomendations for
what video card would be minimally acceptable for this and reasonably cheap
and easy to find?
Or is this a situation where I'll be forced to buy brand new retail to get
something new enough?
A newer ATI Radeon 9000 series card? I am quite surprised that DX9 does not
get along with the Radeon 8500.
I have some nVidia 8xAGP cards with large honking cooling fans on them.
Definitely DX9 compatible. Want model and a price? I got them in a buyout of
a small dealer who closed up shop. Literally every other piece of hardware I
have used thus far from his pile of stuff works fine... Ben Myers

After finding that I could only get the VIA video on an Asus motherboard to
work with the VIA XP drivers under Vista Business (pretty amazing, really),
I put an nVidia-based EVGA eGeForce 6200LE in the system. Every demanding
video task in Vista (including what little I played with the DVD maker
applet) seemed to work fine.
The card itself was cheap--maybe $50? Sadly, I find myself liking it a lot
better than the much more expensive ATI Radeon card I put in my Dim8300 when
its nVidia board died. The 2D performance is not great. I have PCI cards
that would be faster in 2D! 3D performance is very good.

Fred,
Make sure you get a "low Profile" AGP card, if it is the small form-factor
or small desktop model. Found out this after purchasing a GX270 last week
from Ebay, and ordering upgrade hardware before seeing unit. I can use the
card I purchase in an older Dim4600, so there is no problem.

If the GX270 is a low-profile small form factor one, the options for low-profile
cards are very limited... Ben Myers

Well, I don't have a SPECIFIC budget other than "as little as possible".
I got a quantity of surplus GX270s (with the "good" Flextronics
motherboards). I figure, one of them I'll keep for myself and am loading
it with Vista Ultimate so I can learn the ins and outs of it for
supporting my business clients - Although right now NONE of my business
clients are running Vista, I figure it's eventually inevitable, so might
as well get a head start.
The other 5 I'm thinking of loading with Vista Home Premium and send to
college-age and high-school age nieces and nephews. I probably SHOULD
use XP for these 5 machines, they're already COA'd for XP, but I was
thinking Vista because any new machines their friends will get will
probably have Vista so might as well not leave them behind.
So whatever video card I settle on, I'll have to buy (6) of.
But the more I look into it over the past couple days, the more I'm
thinking its probably a fool's errand to stick Vista on the (5) machines
for the nieces/nephews. Even though with new video cards the GX270s
would be more than up to it, I just don't see what it will get them
except for headaches. I'm now thinking that if I load these machines
with XP they'll actually be AHEAD of their friends that are stuck with
Vista.
