Default using non-DELL SATA or SCSI drives on Poweredge 2900

Hello,

I am buying a Dell Poweredge 2900 with one hard drive. I plan to move
hard drives from other machines to this one. Dell customer service
said I would have to buy additional drives ONLY through DELL and could
not attach any non-DELL drives. Is that true? Or can I purchase SATA
or SCSI drives from non-DELL vendors and attach into the empty bays in
the Poweredge 2900 tower?

The configuration I have in mind :
I will be purchasing PERC 5/i and DO NOT want any raid configuration
or hot-plug facilities.
Any new drive that is added will have its own set of file system
defined and should be independent without any RAID mirroring or
otherwise.

Ex. one drive will store images, tiff, gifs, music.
Another will store Business intelligence software from one vendor
Another will store Database Management Software from a second vendor.

This way, depending on what I want to work on, I can start the
necessary components from the hard drive and work. The other hard
drives, although available will not be using the controller and no I/O
will be performed on the components.

I have 2 other dell desktops with 4 SATA drives, which I plan to move
to this new server.
=========

Regards,
Mandar

you can use generic drives, but you may need to purchase the drive
sleds/tray/carriers from dell if you are planning on putting it into one of
the external drive bays. using generic drives will not void your warranty,
but if there is a problem that requires extensive testing to identify, dell
may ask you to remove your non-dell drives in order to continue helping you
troubleshooting.
