Please pardon my ignorance on things hardwarish. A friend would like
to add an external hard-drive to her Dell PC. Her USB controllers are
listed in Device Manager as Intel 8280 1BA/BAM USB Universal Host
Controller 2442 and 2444. Will these be compatible with the USB2.0
connection on the external hard-drives? If not, any suggestions? The
Dell is an older model, maybe 5 years old (that's all I know at this
point).
TIA--

If I recall, if any of the usb device drivers use the word "enhanced"
in the device manager, the pc should then be usb 2.0. If memory is
correct tho, I think a 5 yr old dell pc should have usb 2.0.
I have a 5 year old Dell (dimension 8200) that is USB 1.0.
I had to buy an USB 2.0 controller card to get up to snuff.
And yes, if it shows "Enhanced" then it's 2.0, if not then it's 1.0.

thanks. Not to pick hairs but I think you mean usb1.1 !!
Which model of Dell? If it's a Pentium 3, the ports are USB 1.1, and an add-in
USB 2.0 card would be in order. Certain early models of Pentium 4 are also USB
1.1. Any system with a Socket 423 Pentium 4 CPU is USB 1.1.
A five-year old system is right on the fence between USB 2.0 and 1.1. Your
question is a very good one, because the response is not a simple one as you can

Right as I learned today from Paula. But to be safe I'll always use
the "enhanced" wording in the device manager to draw my conclusions.
Ben, sure wish you were around when I worked with one of my old
bosses. He was a mensa member and love to talk hardware at the "chip"
level. I used to have to read up beforehand to be able to converse
with him because he'd pick conversations with me then about hardware.
He was a great boss tho.

It is indeed a Pentium III. I have read that a USB 2.0 device is
compatible with an old 1.1 port, but of course will not give the
performance benefits of the 2.0 technology. Sound true? In this case
she could either buy a 2.0 card as well, or just buy a 2.0 hard drive
and live with performance that is forty times slower.

It is true. The speed will be what the slowest hardware is. The port
or the device.
I say, get the 2.0 port update if it will work with the PC (The specs on
the PC matches or exceeds the 2.0 port.
