Can you plug in something to get more USB ports? I don't know how
they're wired, whether there are fan-out devices or what that make
them work with the software as if there are more ports.
(Oh, for the days of hardware manuals! You could understand and
even program any hardware device from the DEC, GE, IBM or Honeywell
manuals back in the good old days when manufacturers were actually
writing for programmers, by reading a couple pages. All questions
were anticipated and answered, starting from an acknowledged general
knowledge environment. Now everything has the word ``turbo'' in
it, and nothing else.)
The Inspiron 6400 comes with all of two USB ports, which seems to me
is likely to be low, needswise.

Yes, you can plug a USB2 hub into one port and add more. Some things
won't run on a hub, but most will.
That said, your I6400 has FOUR USB ports. Two on the back and two on
the right side.

You definitely want a powered hub, but it is still true. For example, my
Epson 7600 printer will not work if connected to a hub.
> Can you plug in something to get more USB ports?
A USB hub is what you need to get. Look for a powered one, as that will
ensure you can get the most use out of it. (Non-powered hubs, or hubs that
operate in both modes, do exist. However, every USB device (including the
hub) needs to have some amount of power. When there is only 500mA power
available at the USB port, things get thin pretty quickly.)
I saw a nice APC USB 2.0 hub on sale for $20 at Super Wal-Mart. It is
powered, has eight ports and nice individual LEDs to show you that a port is
in use.

I don't know how I'd get along without a USB hub if I couldn't misuse the
D/Bay expansion port on my Latitude. (The top half is a power connector for
the D/Bay. The bottom is a conventional USB port.)

In theory, you can have up to 127 usb devices through cascading hubs.
In practice.... it would suck, to say the least.
Right! Has anyone ever connected up 127 USB devices on a computer, let alone
through a single USB port? Cable impedence would be a nightmare. This is
another case of paper specsmanship and hype, without a reality check. And
people pick on SCSI for being difficult! ... Ben Myers
