Hi All
I'm having a little problem with my dim5000 XP Home machine
Up to now, whenever I've connected a USB device the little "safe to remove"
icon with the little green arrow has always appeared on the task bar.
......and now it doesn't show up anymore and I really don't like just pulling
the devices out.
Is there a way to get the icon to reappear - I just don't know where to look
now...... tried everything I can think of
TIA

To what type device are you specifically referring?
There are probably more ways than one to accomplish what you want, but
here's an example of a couple/three:
1) Right-click on your "Start" button, click "properties", click "Taskbar"
tab, click "Customize" button, locate the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon,
click the drop-down menu to its right and select "Always Show". Click "OK"
/ "Apply" / and "OK"
---or----
When I plug my Seagate USB external HDD in, once it's loaded and initialized
it appears in "My Computer" and in device manager.
2) Quick way: go to device manager, locate the device, double-click upon
it, go to the "policies" tab, and check/tick "Optimize for Performance".
--or the long way to do the same thing--
3) Right-click on the external HDD, go to "properties", click on the
"hardware" tab, then highlight the specific device (in this example,
"Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB device".
Click the "properties" button, then the "policies" tab, and check/tick
"Optimize for performance" - which should cause the "Safely Remove Hardware"
wizard to appear in the systray. Click "OK", "Apply", and "OK".
That's all I've got, though mind you I typically only connect USB flash
drives, my external HDD, and a Sony camera. If you're using a USB hub or
something else, it may differ.

Do your own research (Google) on this but in XP I believe that you can
safely remove things like USB flash drives without going through the
process you describe using the icon.
There is a setting somewhere (I think) that has something to do with
write cacheing -- not sure if this is relevant, but if it's set a
certain way which I think is the default then you could remove without
the icon.
Again though, this is something you should verify by doing a Google
search.
Thanks for all replies.

I already tried those things you suggested with no success - I usually have
all my icons on show anyway (ie un-hidden), however I did notice when going
thru the hide/unhide icons part I noticed that the Remove hardare icon
showed up in the Past Item section but displayed as a Folder rather than its
usual icon with the little green arrow - but even setting that to 'always
show' had no effect.
I use two different Usb hard drives, assorted usb memory sticks and assorted
Usb devices but its the same problem with all.
My drives seem to be set on the 'safe to remove' setting rather than
'optimize for performance'
This problem only seems to have happened recently and the system "cannot
restore to an earlier restore point" (have tried several points). Just hope
I'm no corrupting anything when I pull em out.
I guess I'm just trying to avoid a complete re-install, would using the
repair console on the windows xp installation disc repair this type of
problem and would I lose anything if I tried this method (not familiar with
it at all)

FWIW, I routinely connect/disconnect my USB flash drives and my lone
external HDD routinely w/o using the "safe to remove" function.
I do have to disconnect my external *after* I've cloned to it because (in
the past) leaving it connected (with its duplicate boot record I suppose)
causes Windows to do weird things during boot. g
Anyway - running a CHKDSK from the recovery console might help. Since your
restore points are hosed, something of significance is going on and it's
obviously not good.
While I'm not sure the "CHKDSK /R or /F" (from the recovery console) will
repair/fix the errors, I don't believe it would hurt.

Google is probably your friend in this situation. Here's what I found
quickly:
>>>
Open up your RUN dialog box and paste this into it:
I wouldn't just blindly execute the command above (well, actually
sometimes I am lazy and careless so maybe I would). To be safe, I
recommend more Googling.

Hi, I actually did quite a bit of googling before I posted and although I
found a nice little bit of software to do the job "Usb Disc Ejector" I still
couldn't find an answer (as I found out on google) to a regularly asked
question - everyone seemed to know a work-around but not the actual answer.
I'm a bit surprised that considering the amount of people complaining about
a similar situation that Msoft haven't looked into it yet.
Another annoying thing is that during my digging around I also noticed that
my volume control has disappeared as well (and possibly a few other
considering the 'smallness' of my taskbar. - (yes, tried all the usual to
relocate the vol control). So I guess a full reinstall in on the
cards........... Have done full virus scans and used Spybot search and
Destroy but found nothing......................brgds TO'T
