My son bought a used Dell Dimension 8100 with the hard drive wiped clean. I am pretty sure the original OS was ME. I installed a Dell version of XP on it and it worked fine here with a CRT monitor. When he took it home and hooked it up to the flat panel monitor he bought with the system, it won't show the proper resolution. It will not adjust from 640 X 480 in the display properties. Everything is very large and distorted with distorted color. The nVidia video device shows that it is not available. I am thinking it needs a new driver, so when I went to the Dell website to download drivers, there were no drivers for XP, the latest version available was 2000. Will these drivers work? Is the problem even the drivers?
Your Windows XP install is incomplete. Go to the Dell web site and download the
XP drivers for the following Dimension 8100 devices and install them in EXACTLY
the same order as shown below:
1. Intel chipset
2. Whichever nVidia video card is installed
3. Ethernet
4. audio
Reboots may be required.
After doing this, the system will be good to go and it will display things the
way it should... Ben Myers

Hi,
The Dell Web page for drivers for the Dimension 8100 http://tinyurl.com/2ve6pu doesn't list drivers for Windows XP but in most
cases Windows 2000 drivers will work. In fact there are two drivers for
different nVidia cards and both are listed for Win XP... Dean

I think so. Try seeing if the drivers are available on Nvidia's web
site or just try to google around for nvidia drivers based on your
model. No guarantee you'll find it but it's worth a shot. As someone
else said, the win2000 drivers might work for XP (not sure tho).
The Intel chipset drivers work with 2000 or XP. I'm pretty sure that the Intel
Ethernet drivers are the same. Ditto for whatever audio chip.
Worst case, if the Win 2000 drivers from the Dell site do not work, one can
always download the XP drivers from the web sites of the chip manufacturers.
I've had to do this many times, especially when a crappy vendor like HP has
almost no drivers on its web site... Ben Myers

Original OS was ME.
The 8200 came with either ME (early units) or XP (later units).
You could look on Dells site and see if they used the same video card in
the 8200 (it was the 8100 replacement machine)

Thank you all for responding. I did find the Drivers on the Dell website for 2000 and installed it successfully. I did not find the chipset so I couldn't install that but it did not seem to make a difference. thanks again.
