The upgrade will degrade performance. Given the same hardware, Windows XP runs
more slowly because it's resident operating system code is bigger, leaving less
room for your programs to run. I'd say stick with Windows 2000. If your
system is having performance issues, there are a number of cleanup type things
you can do to improve it.

No. Windows 2000 is leaner than XP. However, reinstalling a new OS
likely will improve performance, particularly if you haven't done it in
a long time. Windows gets slower and slower over time.
To add a little.
There is no upgrade path from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Home, you
will need to perform a Clean Installation.
But you can upgrade to Windows XP Pro.
If you would choose to upgrade to Windows XP Home or Pro, the upgrade
version of either will work.

I am contemplating a clean OS install on a separate hard drive and see if
there is any degree of performance degradation. If it doesn't work, I will
swap the W2K OS drive back. Since installing OS and the subsequent Windows
update are very time consuming, I therefore asked for advice. Thanks
everyone who replied.
