Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried them but no joy. My laptop was
reduced to an intolerable crawl. I'm sure something conflicted, but what?
AVG 8.0 works fine on my desktop.
Anyway, I finally said enough and uninstalled AVG. I am now trying Avira. I
am currently running a scan. Anyway, my laptop is back to its spunky self.

if they don't decide to update it and fill it full of extra crap then the
current free version of Avast is worth a try
Hi. Avira is working great and so is my laptop...finally!

Great. How did you learn of Avira? Right now I can't recall (need
more coffee in me tho) hearing of Avira. I suppose I could Google on
it but just thought I'd ask here. I have seen several recommend Avast
but I have no experience with it.
Now it's a moot point but I don't recall anyone suggesting to go back
to AVG 7.5 before you found Avira to work. Bottom line is tho, you
are protected and happy.
Careful about the coffee. You don't want to end up like Tweek in South Park.

First of all, I can't go back to AVG 7.5. They won't support that version
any more (no more updates).
I read about Avira in PC WORLD I think. It was rated as the best free AV
program. Other studies say it is best at finding stuff, but not quite as
good at removing it (although pretty good overall).
I practice safe hex, never open unknown email attachments, but every so
often I still end up with some virus.
Avira did find 2 very low level viruses (trojans-- but more like spyware I
guess --). No problem removing it.
Anyway, as I think I mentioned, my laptop runs great now.
