looking for some expert, or even semi-expert advice. I'm running a Dell
XPS400, with Winxp Media Edition. I use Seamonkey as my browser. I
recently tried to remove the pesky Zone Alarm, and now cannot access the
internet with either Seamonkey or IE. I can still access email, so I'm
wondering what file I may have deleted that will not let me access the
interenet with either browser, yet allows email program.
Could this be something I deleted from the bios? I do recall taking one
line out as advised in a forum on removing ZL. Is there a way to revert
back to the original bios? I have tried restore to no avail.
Can anyone tell me what I might be able to do to regain internet access
on my desktop pc?
Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I tried reinstallng Winxp in the hopes that it would help
the situation, and was lucky to come out of that alive. The disk sent
to me by Dell said XP Media edition on it, but when it installed, it
kept going to XP professional.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan
Settings. Make sure that automatically all check boxes are Unchecked
and OK out. The way to get there may be a little different as I am
using Vista.
That should clean up this problem. It's not a socket problem because
mail still works. I suspect IE and Seamonkey were using a proxy, which
was ZA.

Beth, I wonder if you can use a restore point to get back to where
everything worked before? Please after you get things working again,
make a BACKUP so you can get back to a good starting point when
necessary.

I've restored until I'm blind. Is there a way to retrieve the original
bios? Is it stored anywehere? Or is there a log of what I may have
taken out?
I seemed to remember that option on my old PC.

Are you confusing bios with registry?? I think the restore would
bring back the older registry. As for the bios, I think some bios's
have a default settings but I can't say for yours. If it does, I'd
use it and see what happens upon rebooting.
WinrescueXP is what I use for restoring older registries or backing up
current registries only but that won't help you right now but maybe in
the future? Acronis True Image Home 10 is what I use for my main
backups.

It's not a BIOS problem, particularly if email still works.

Restore points and RegEdit are last resorts. Your flailing if your using
those first. Do some tests to see just what your situation is first.
You still have internet as evidenced with your ability to use email. Try
some other applications. telnet, FTP, Ping or tracert. Try to ping your
ISP's gateway. What happens? Sea Monkey and IE are the same animal
network wise in that they both use port 80 and 443. Email is on port 25
out and 110 on the way in. Tom may be on to something if ZA runs as a
proxy. Go through your browser settings and remove any thing proxie.
Or just set the browser back to defaults.

I agree normally that the restore point is a last resort but I
suggested it because if the person isn't too computer literate or is
in a rush, it might be simpler / faster to try.
