These are not chipset limitations. I am almost 100% certain that the variants
of the 845 chipset all support up to 2GB. Some clever little Dell hardware
person may have gummed up the works... Ben Myers

I think you're right for the 845gv chipset tho I'm not sure why Dell
says 1GB. Being this mobo is made for Dell, I think it might have a
quirk in that it only goes to 1GB but this is just a guess on my part.
I just replaced a HD in a dimension 2400 today but it had only 768
megs of memory in 2 slots so I can't say what its max is.

That implies a maximum at least 1 gb. as 768 in 2 slots =512+256.
Where one stick of 512 goes, another can usually be added. Of course
you COULD look it up, but what's the fun in THAT?

Yeah I think the max is 1GB but technically I can't prove it. But I
see where you're coming from.
This is not by any means diffinitive, but I had a 1GB PC2700 DIMM laying
around (not even sure it is good). I pulled the memory from my 2400 and
it wouldn't even boot with the DIMM. The Dell logo displays and it
locks up.
I put the old memory back in and it boots fine (640MB).
