I paid $50 for a set of Dell speakers when I ordered my Dimension
8300. They are nothing more than a rebadged Altec-Lansing 2.1 speaker
set. The sound quality is very, very good. They will also get
frightfully loud without distortion. I play CDs, MP3s, iTunes music
store purchases and TV through them by way of an ATI PCI TV wonder
board installed in the 8300.
Some of the low end offerings in Dell's speaker lineup are much
cheaper, but I recently installed an brand new OptiPlex that came with
their inexpensive stereo speakers and found them to sound decent. They
plugged into a USB port for power. As small as they were, they didn't
have a nice deep sound, but the result was entirely passable and
plenty loud enough in a large kitchen.
The only Dell speakers I haven't liked were the so-called "sound bar"
modules.

Yes. The ".1" is how speakers with a subwoofer are marketed. It's a
very powerful subwoofer as well. Dell/Altec put a detent in the middle
of the subwoofer level control, but I always keep it just one notch
above the minimum setting.

I ordered a Dimension with basic A525 speakers and a Dell sub woofer and was
very happy with the sound quality for the money spent. I have another
Dimension for which I bought a separate Creative sound system with subwoofer
at more than double the money I paid Dell and the sound quality difference
between the two is negligible. Both sound excellent. AW

Ok thanks so much August!
the A525 system for abt $60 was the very system I was
thinking of going for.... two speaker and sub woofer
I don't really have time to research third party
speakers but didn't want to over pay for the A525 if
its not a god "value"
