Default Telephone Modem for XPS M1330 Laptop

My sister just bought a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop, but failed to order
the external modem even though she needs it at a couple of locations.
I see that Dell offered an External Mini USB Modem for $20.00, but I
can't find any description of it on the Dell website. I found a
Diamond SM56USB modem at Wal-Mart for $35.88. Any other suggestions
for an external laptop modem?

I suspect either would be fine but must admit I am absolutely shocked it
doesn't have an internal modem. Even my lowly Inspiron 1420, which
isn't much bigger, has one.

I think Dell really blew it here.

No but as you seem to indicate, just give the walmart modem a try and
see if it does the job. Walmart is pretty good about taking things
back if it doesn't work out so you have little to loose.

Well if they bought it from the outlet store, it wouldn't surprise me.
On some occasions, the laptops come in weird (or should I say less
desireable) configurations so you really have to pay attention when
you "think" you got a good price.

I think what Tom is saying is that one would normally expect an internal
modem to be included in a premium model notebook - since it's included on
most every other model they make including the budget models.

Going a step further, one might hope they'd include the external USB modem
required as part of the purchase price - again, since it is an XPS premium
model.

Mostly I can't believe there isn't just an RJ11 jack on the side of the
laptop. Who wants to carry an external modem in 2008? 1991 maybe.

Of course it would have been a 300 baud Hayes Smartmodem. Top of the
line.

Seriously, the M1330 underwhelms me. I compared it to the I1420 and
seriously considered both. I really believe the I1420 is a better
machine for about 1/2 the price. It isn't much heavier, it has a bigger
screen and everything is internal. The M1330 is cooler looking, but how
important is that (and the I1420 is a nice machine).

Not meaning to insult anyone's choice -- I like the M1330 -- I guess I'm
just cheap!

Tom

I can't really disagree with anything you've said here. In fact, the only
reason I bought the Vostro 1400 was:

1) The XP option, and.....

2) At the time it was considerably cheaper than an identically configured
1420 (which is the model I'd preferred).

I've seen both the M1330 and 1420 and agree with your assessment.

you don't want to lug around that big clunkly diamond sb56usb.
you want a dongle type usb modem like this one...

or this one

they didn't include a modem in the m1330. i suppose they felt that havnig a
internal wwan card was good enough (requires subscription), or that the
wireless bluetooth could be paired with a cell phone for periodic modem use.
seems silly not to includ a modem, particulary if you ever saw the m1330 in
person. the machine looks much slimer and light weight in photos then it
actually is in person. there are still lots of people that use dial-up.

I like the Zoom modem with the dongle. I think that's better than
having a rigid plug-in. I wish Dell would put a picture of theirs on
the website. Can't find out anything about it.
