Had a strange inceident which has never happened before. I bought off Ebay a
Lat D620 as a spairs or repair. When I checked the Tag it had still about
260 days left of a 3 year NBD onsite warranty, so I duly completed the what
i thought was a the correct form, on the Dell eruo site which took me
through to the International Tag Transfer Dept, they then contacted me to
say we need some more info as I could not provide them with the registered
owner and compant name, i gave them the wanted info which included the
Express service Code and the auction number on ebay. In the meantime while I
was waiting a reply I contacted the company who sold the machine on ebay, to
ask where they got it from. They told me that they bought it from an
insurance company who had paid out a claim to the original owner for
accidental damage to the machine, however they condition was they were not
allowed to disclose the original purchases name and address because of data
protection laws.
Anyway to cut a long story short I eventiually recived the Tag transfer
through all in my name etd, so i logged a call to Dell support Via Bangalore
and then rerouted through to Dell Latitude support in Scotland. And thats
where the problems really began, they started off by saying they couldn't
provide support if I could give the registed company name of the original
owner, I went through the whole story with them but they stuck to there
guns, i explained I'd never had this problem before as I've transfered loads
of machines this way, off he wernt to speak to his manager and still they
wouldn't budge and said TAG transfer was not the same as ownership transfer.
It was only when I explained that the link on the support.euro.dell.com site
when you filled in the form for change of ownership sent it to the
International Tag Transfer Team at Roundrock.
They then agreed to send out a tech, not that I need a Tech as I'm a
certified DCSE engineer who used to work for them.
it is their policy to only speak to the registered owner and to only tranfer
ownership if you have the name, address and phone number of the original
owner. otherwise they would potenitaly supplying theives with technical
support and spare parts.
so, i don't think your story varied from that policy other than the
seller/insurance company telling you that they were somehow able to change
the warranty information (which i doubt was correct as it is a matter of
completing a form that goes into a black hole and only comes out in the form
of an email to the new owner *if* you got the original owner information
correct).
i recently found a dell dimension 8300 sitting on the curb and brought it
home. found the problem to be a defective video card with leaky capacitors.
looked up the tag number and found that there was a couple of months left on
the warranty. searched the machine for clues regarding the previous owner
and found a name that when looked up in the white pages came up with the
address of the building that i found it in front of... being able to
confirm the original owner dell happily replaced the video card (well after
a long and painful problem resolution procedure of course).
in your case i doubt that any warranty was included in the sale so the fact
that the seller/insurance company tried to help at all is somewhat
remarkable. yet it is a shame that you can't piece it together... why not
search goggle groups for the service tag to see if any information about the
original owner pops up...

Chris,
Dell did agree to do the repair, but only on the basis that because their
mistake was on the web page and the ownership tranfer form went through to
International TAG transfer and not ownership transfer. The machine is now
officially registered to me but they just bulked as I could not tell them
the original owners company, maybe I could try a file recovery and see if I
can dig anything up.
I've pasted below the TAG transfer email recieved from Dell with the
nessesary details removed,
Dear Sir/Madam
