Default System Restore Takes Several Minutes to Load

Is this normal? I have a very fast system. I had to do a system restore, and
it took several minutes to come up! If not normal, can I reinstall JUST
system restore. There is no way I'm wiping my HD!

I don't need to use it often, but IIRC it can take a while.

Do you mean for the initial dialogue box to appear before you even try
doing a restore ?

One small note - things fail, like hard drives, the electronics on
them etc. and if this happened, you would lose it completely anyway.
You'd have no choice if this happened.

You do have backups of the *important* data, don't you ?

- i'd rather spend a few hours and $5 on blank DVDs now than lose the
lot...

Exactly. It takes minutes for the initial dialogue box to appear. Something
is wrong.

I doubt it. I believe it is doing a lot of housekeeping and inventory
of your current environment.

Yes, my data is safe.
But I don't like a program that fails. How do you reinstall a system
program?? It was easy in XP. You just uninstalled it, then reinstalled it
from the disk.

Not quite.

System restore assumes something is wrong - otherwise you wouldn't
be doing a system restore in the first place, would you ?

As has just been pointed out, because it assumes something is wrong
it will take time checking out the whole system, quite possibly
doing a disk surface scan before it allows you to proceed.

In a situation where beggars\users can't be choosers, speed of operation
and user friendliness in terms of progress bars etc will probably
come very low in the list of priorities.

But it used to be faster. Then I did a restore, and it hasn't been right
since.
Now what do you think, and how do I fix it?

Personally, I'd turn it off, delete the restore points and turn it back
on. Then manually create a restore point. Could just be overhead.

Or I wouldn't worry about it.

What did ?

Are you saying this is the second system restore you've done,
and it ran much faster the first time ?

Because you didn't say that in your original post.

Al you said there was that the first time you used it was slower than
you might have expected as compared with normal apps.

..

> Then I did a restore, and it hasn't been right

All you said in your post was that this system restore took
minutes to produce the original dialogue box. And that in your
opinion this shouldn't happen because your system is fast.
By which presumably you mean it's fast running normal apps.

As a matter of interest have you tried a doing full surface
scan yet ?

> Now what do you think,

Think about what ? Your plan to just re-install system restore?

But what makes you think it's not normal ?

> and how do I fix it?

Fix what ?

You still haven't mentioned why you needed to do a system restore
in the first place either.
