Hi All,
I'm planning on buying an AIO ink jet printer but wanted to get some
opinions, if possible. I cant spend more than $350. I'm looking for
something w/scanning & printing capabilities. Fax would be good too
but not a requirement. I'm not to concerned w/speed or photo print
quality. I'm disabled w/limited dexterity and am looking for something
w/an ADF and duplex capabilities.
I was considering the Canon Pixma MP 830 and HP 7680 as they've got
some good reviews. I have read that the Canon and many other AIO
printers w/duplexiong are prone to paper jam & some are difficult to
fix, this would be a problem for me so I'd want something that doesn't
jam often and is fairly easy to get going should it jam. Thanks for
any info!

If you plan on using it much, buy a laser. The ink will kill you. They
virtually give away ink jet printers to establish a cadre of ink
junkies.

I've had very good experience with the low-end HP all-in-ones as
network printers with the qualification that the PC software seup
takes waht seems like hours on a machine that isn't the latest and
fastest. ISTR the download is 50MB. Several times it says "finished,
reboot" and then goes into another phase when restarted.
Once it's set up, it's fine.
There is a color A-I-O that is getting some buzz but I haven't seen an
evaluation yet. So far, only Best Buy has them and they are in short
supply. The cost-per-page is supposed to be cheap.
I have the HP Officejet L7680 and am very pleased with it. I have done
a pretty high volume scans and haven't had a single jam. Duplex
directly to PDF works very well. I've probably scanned 1000 pages in a
month.
My only problem, and it is minor, is that there is a bug in the
software. There's two ways to scan. One scans to a preview window and
then you accept. That works perfectly. The other scans directly to the
PDF without the user intervention. That crashes and hopefully will be
fixed in the next release. It's only once per scan, regardless of the
number of pages, so it doesn't really matter.
The other problem is that they have NOT released proper Vista software,
so it only works on XP.
Sounds like I don't like it, but I do. Works fine as a networked
printer -- even has an Ethernet port, although I haven't tried that, I
network it through USB attached to one computer.

Actually the 7680 uses big carts and is about the same as a Laserjet

Don't get an HP1310. We had one that never fed right; the theatre
just retired one when its paper detector failed.
We've had an HP 6210 for a couple of months: printer, scanner,
copier, fax, with a sheetfeed. Can't talk about reliability yet, but
so far it's been much more like my past HP printer experience (if
those 1310s had been my first HPs, there never would have been another
one). Roughly $200 (I've got a hazy memory it was more like $150 when
I got it at Sams Club).

(crosspost removed)
I like my HP Deskjet 7410. It's wireless, so I can place it wherever
I want in my apartment. It has great paper handling capabilities. It
scans and prints duplex. I can scan duplex directly to .pdf. It does
an OK job as a photo printer.
While the retail price is stated to be $399-$499, it can be had for as
little as $199 if you keep your eye on the coupon sites.

I recently put a 1310 out for the trash. What a piece of junk

I have the Canon Pixma MP830, and so far I'm pleased with it, but I
don't use it that much. Probably only printed about 75 pages or so in
color and it's now telling me the Magenta cartridge is low so I can't
really evaluate the ink usage. I know some printers come with
"starter" ink cartridges that contain less than the retail
replacements, but can't say that's the case for this one.
No jams at all. I've used the scanning, copying, ADF, fax, but not
done a photo quality yet.
Good thing was that with sales and rebates, I got the machine for
about 1/2 price.
