You will not usually hear a difference in playback. There may be a more
significance in making analog sound recordings, if you do that.

It does. She might not have to, and XP should have the drivers. Pretty
mainstream stuff on that board by now.

Yes, the 10-conductor cable from the sound card should plug into connector
#5. That's the way it is on my XPS410. I'd just un-plug the cable that's
already connected to #5 and plug in the cable from the sound card.

He's talking about the cable that goes from the white 10-pin connector
that's on the sound card (along the top edge of the card near the rear
mounting bracket) to the I/O panel at the front of the case which in turn
feeds the front case jacks.

No need to use the cable at all if you don't need the use of the jacks on
the front of the case.

Ok, now I have a big problem.

I was hooking up the sound card cable to the I/O panel and noticed the
I/O panel was a little loose. I un******* it the wrong way and the I/O
panel became totally loose. No problem, just screw it back I thought.

After I ******* it back I now have two problems...

1. The connections (especially for sound) are loose. When I plug in a
cable I can feel the card moving back and forth from inside.

2. The computer is not turning on at all. It appears that because the
I/O panel isn't aligned properly that the system now can't even be
booted.

If anyone can be generous enough to provide some detailed help here
I'd be eternally grateful.

Ok, I just kept on trying and finally the I/O panel snapped in
correctly. All is now good. The system can boot.

The unfortunate news is that the sound cable actually didn't even fit
on the I/O panel. It was a 10-pin white cable coming out of the
Audigy2 but it looks like the I/O panel wanted a cable with 1 row of
10 pins and another row with 9 pins. Oh well. It's not the end of the
world.

The power switch is cabled to the front I/O, and then another cable runs
from the I/O to the system board.

A word of advice: you do not want to bend any pins on the I/O board......
