Hey Tom -

(I came in late as well)......

I think the cable she's talking about is for 1394 function for the Audigy
card (on the 8400). While I don't have that card and don't see them very
often, I fear she may be hosed as I can't find a diagram for the E520 board
that indicates a dedicated connector for it. ?

I know Dell has put some version of that card in the Dim5100/515X/and
E520's, but I don't know if it is the same configuration.

To the OP: take a hard look at the cable connect on the 8400 motherboard.
You should be able to easily locate one similar on the E520 board if it
exists.

If it helps, the cable I have is white on both ends and each end has
10 holes in it. One end was pluged into the first port on the left of
the Audigy2 card and the other end was plugged in somewhere else on
the 8400 system. I'm trying to figure out where to plug this cable in
on the E520 (if it's still needed of course).

The white 10-pin connector is used to connect a cable from the sound card to
the front panel audio jacks on the Dell.

My XPS410 uses the same cable.

On the 410, If you look at the front of the case just behind the front
jacks, there is a small circuit card with a connector on the edge of the
card facing the outside side of the case. That's where that 10-pin cable
connects.

Look at the manual for the 520 here, and look at the section for the I/O
panel. It shows the connector I'm referring to.

OK, that's an aux input cable. Could have been going to one of two
places. The first is the CD/DVD drive as I described and it is not
needed (wasn't really on the 8400 either, so that's probably not where
it was going).

The second is a connection to a modem, for use with voice features like
a voice mail box. Did your 8400 have a modem? If that was it, then it
isn't needed in your E520, as who uses a modem? If you did use it for
voice mail, you would have noticed it not working by now

Dang I forgot that. There should be a matching cable in the 520

The cable for the E520 may not be present unless it was ordered with a sound
card. I may be mistaken, but if there was no sound card ordered for th e520,
there might be a shorting plug installed in the I/O card connector. If so,
I's probably see about transplanting the one from the 8400 to the 520 rather
than try to find the part no for the cable and ordering one from Dell.

Or, .... just don't worry about it if you don't think you'll be needing to
use the front panel ports for the sound card.

Ok, I've taken the cable out of the 8400 and found the E520 I/O panel
diagram at this link.

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1461564

Judging by the picture, the only place that appears to fit the 10 hole
white cable would be to unplug #5 for the integrated audio and replace
it with the 10 hole white cable connected to the sound card. Is this
correct? Will the jumpers need to be changed or should I leave them as
is?

Yes, that's exactly what I would do. If there's already a cable attached to
#5, unplug it and connect the cable from the sound card to the #5 connector.

I'm not sure what the jumpers are for, but I'd leave them alone.

If the 8400 HAS integrated sound at all (it may not have it), after
removing the Audigy2, you would have to enable the integrated sound and
install drivers.
