I've used eFax since way back when. For a while it was free. Then my wife
sent a bunch of faxes, and they now charge me $10/month ($120/yr prepaid) It's
worth the money compared to a separate fax line and fax machine. I scan the
occasional documents that need to be signed and faxed, convert to PDF and fax
them out.
eFax also helps me in my work when a client needs to set up a fax machine. I
can log onto my web mail and both send and receive faxes to their machine,
confirming that it all works OK.
I haven't had the time to investigate whether there are less expensive but still
viable alternatives in our rapidly changing world... Ben Myers

Not necessary to have a separate fax line unless you deem it
necessary. I have a panasonic fax/recorder/cordless phone combo and
use only one phone line (works great for me). Of course some people
want a dedicated fax line for business reasons.

Of course if you don't mind going outside, you can usually go to
places like Kinko's which will charge per page to fax. I just mention
this as another alternative to the others. Personally if I were to
fax a lot, I like the idea of the fax via web site.

I use fax for things like writing my questions for a doctor prior to a
doctor's visit. It has a much better chance of getting to the doctor
if it's a hardcopy from the fax rather than an e-mail. E-mail
addresses are often not available or published for a general
practitioner for example.
I also have used it to send out meeting agendas in addition to e-mail
because a lot of times people won't print out an e-mailed agenda.
I will try to find the site that doesn't require a monthly
subscription fee. I would think software could be written for a Treo
to be able to send a fax via the cellular network -- if so that solves
my problem.
Yeah, but those incoming faxes can be a real annoyance when the line is shared
with any type of voice traffic. Try using a home phone number for incoming
faxes, get awakened at 3am, and you will understand well what I mean.
eFax is really, really quiet... Ben Myers

And these days, I try to email PDFs rather than send faxes. But, still, some
people insist on an "official" fax, still very much recognized as THE legal way
to send signed legal documents electronically... Ben Myers
