Default Scan Disk is Gone!

Uh, the option to "Scan Disk" is gone off my Dell E510 Windows
XP SP2 machine.

My machine is running odd. When I go to outlook express, it takes
like a minute to delete each message. I rebooted. Same problem.
I then went to system tools and could not find "scan disk."

What's should I do! System Restore?

Thanks!

I don't believe it was in the start menu.

Try this

1. Using Scandisk: How to Scan Your Hard Disk
2. Open the Run Dialog Box
3. Type sfc /scannow
4. Click ok
5. Start the Scandisk Utility
6. Waiting on Scandisk

Hmm, everything seems back to normal now. I did a system restore
to the beginning of February. Did not help. I rebooted again and
everything
seems fixed, so far.

Hi!

ScanDisk was only for the "DOS-based" versions of Windows--95, 98,
98SE and Me. The equivalent tool in Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista is
CHKDSK. There are a few ways to run it:

1. Right click a drive in My Computer. Choose properties. Click on the
Tools tab. (Note: This may not work on the boot drive. See below for
more.)

2. Open a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd <enter>). Type in CHKDSK
C: to perform a read only check of your file system. If problems are
found or you want to fix any problems even if you don't yet know about
them (use with caution!), use CHKDSK C: /F.

You will be told that you can't check the volume right now and asked
if you want to perform a boot-time check. Answer "yes" to this
question and reboot. Windows has to "dismount" a volume before it can
be checked, something that can't be done when the operating system is
running from that volume.

Note that CHKDSK doesn't react well if the underlying disk is faulty,
so you might want to rule out any possibility of hard disk failure.
You may also want to make a backup--if there is severe file system
damage, CHKDSK may make an incredible mess. I'd strongly suggest
running it read-only first.

Nope. There is *no* ScanDisk in Windows NT, 2000 or XP. And there probably
isn't one in Vista either.

Example: (best viewed with a fixed width font!):

Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>chkdsk /?
Checks a disk and displays a status report.

CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/i] [/C] [/L[:size]]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
filename FAT only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F Fixes errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every
file
on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
(implies /F).
/L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified
number
of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current
size.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
(implies /F).
/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index
entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
structure.

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skipping certain checks of the volume.

Typing in scandisk from the command prompt, or looking for scandskw.exe
won't result in any success. They simply don't exist on NT, 2000 and XP.

No loss, really. CHKDSK is marginally better, but not a true hard drive
diagnostic, only a piece of software to verify and repair the integrity of the
Windows file system. A lot of people don't distinguish between the two.
