I'm having real troubles with my USB connections. Very inconsistent and
hard to predict problems.
The machine is a Dimension 4550, XPHome, fully updated, current BIOS,
etc. It's been running fine, including USB, until tonight.
There's 4 USB ports in the back, occupied by a keyboard, a Seagate USB
drive, a Western USB drive, and a Canon printer with built-in card
reader. There's 2 USB ports under the front 'hood', occupied by a
wireless mouse receiver, and a San Disk flash drive (or a card
reader...this port is used to swap out different cards and readers).
Lately, if the front port is occupied with a flash drive, sometimes when
I turn on either external USB drive, I'll get USB device not recognized.
If I turn on the printer, the built-in card reader will not show in file
explorer, and I can't print to the printer (printer not online message).
Sometimes I'll get Windows Delayed Write Failed when trying to Safely
Remove USB Mass Storage Device for either USB external drive. This seems
to happen most often when the front port has a flash drive in it.
Also, file explorer has mis-lettered all USB devices at least once
tonight.
Is it possible to uninstall the USB controllers in the device manager?
And, will they reinstall when rebooted? There are four listed, one is a
2.0 Enhanced Host Controller, and below that are 3 USB Universal Host
Controllers.
