Reinstalling ANOTHER Dells Win xp on my Dell......
Hmmm Can I do this?
I have 2 dells (8250.....8400)
Both came with XP pro.
The 8250 came with SP1 and the 8400 SP2 ( about 2 years apart :-) )
I wanna reinstall XP pro on the 8250 - can I use the disks from the 8400?
(i.e. already have SP 2 loaded) - If so - which registration key do I use? I
assume I still use the 8250's?
Just seem to remember that as long as they are dells I can use the OEM
disks?

Use the newest CD. Being Dell's OEM version of XP onto a Dell box, I
would not expect to be asked for a product key.

This is where I'm stupid I guess. I thought Tom or someone told me
that legally the disc is tied to the pc it was purchased with
regardless of how many identical or same brand pc's you have.

The physical disc itself from the OEM does not carry any identifying
serial numbers limiting its use to just a single machine. However, the
OEM Product Key (or COA) is specific to the first machine in which it
is used. The OEM Product Key, or COA, is tied to the machine.

Ok but I thought whoever told me it's in the EULA that ties the disc
to the particular pc/laptop (inotherwords by agreement not serial
number) ???? If I'm wrong then when is the product key necessary
when doing an installation for the OS purchased with the hardware?
Or are you saying the disc is NOT tied to the hardware?
Seems like the more I read the more I get confused. Guess that's why
I don't like the license agreements .

You're fine using the new disk. As long as they are both XP Pro, all
you're doing is installing a version that already has SP2 installed. It
will install fine without asking for a product ID at all.
If it originally had XP Home and you were installing XP Pro, that would
be a legal problem. Wouldn't be a physical problem as it would install
and not need activation, it would just be wrong

It will work fine. I just reinstalled XP on an old 4550 and used my
latest SP2 CD to avoid having to do all the updates. No worries.
Perfectly legal.

The answer was correct. The CD itself has nothing to do with it. The
little sticker on the machine with the hologram is the license. Media is
unimportant. You can reinstall with a burned CD and it is legal.

Thanks Tom and all of you - I might say, that the CDs havn;t even been
opened yet :-) - guess Dell just uses a disk image :-)
