I have Sonic Digital Media LE v7 pre-installed on my Dimension 5100. It has
deteriorated to the point that it only rarely works. How can I reinstall
only this program (not restore the whole hard drive to its new state)?

If you got the complete set of installation media with the computer when you
bought it, you can reinstall it from one of the CDs.
The Dell web site has an 82MB download which may or may not install properly
unless there is a previous version of Sonic on the system. In my past
experience, the CD burning downloads from the Dell web site were just updates,
i.e. could not be used to install on a fresh hard drive. But Dell may have
changed its policy re. CD burning software.
As an alternative, you can try the very decent and free CDBurnerXPPro. If you
enjoy running Linux programs with a Windows menu, try Easy Burning, which I use
to burn ISO images onto CDs. Easy Burning is lean, mean, simple... Ben Myers

And good luck with any reinstall, no matter how you might attempt it.
I recently worked on a Dell 3000 that had Sonic Dig LE 7. Every attempt to
open "MyDVD" to burn discs was greeted with 3-4 error messages/prompts, one
of which was a "Please wait while Windows configures..." dialogue box, as if
the program was being initialized for the very first time.
I tried repair the program from add/remove, and I then UN-installed the
program from same. Cleaned up any remnants after doing so. Downloaded
version 7 from the website - no joy. Same problem.
A quick search of the Dell forums (at support.dell.com) led to a couple of
threads about brand-new systems experiencing the same thing.
The workaround: open MyDVD, click (in this order) cancel, cancel, OK, and
cancel.....and the program opens and otherwise works fine.
It could be a specific problem with this version of Sonic. The 3000 I was
working with was built 7/2/2005.
