i think that is for 2003 only and will not work for office 2007.
secondly, aren't those docx files really just xml files in disguise?
try and open with notepad.
you should be able to read the contents. perhaps make changes.
not the ideal, but can serve in a pinch.

No problem if I am at work.
But I get the files at home where I only have WORD97.
I really don't want to upgrade. I am fine with the software I have at home.
Hence my question regarding the availability of a viewer.

INTRODUCTION
Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 and Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003
cannot natively open documents that are saved in the Office Open XML
Formats. However, you can install the Microsoft Office Compatibility
Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats to view these files.

provides when you use it with Word Viewer 2003 and with Excel Viewer 2003.
MORE INFORMATION
The compatibility pack enables Word Viewer 2003 and Excel Viewer 2003 to
open and view Word 2007 and Excel 2007 documents. The compatibility pack
lets the viewers support the following 2007 Microsoft Office document

Microsoft Office Word 2007

• Microsoft Office Excel 2007 template (*.xltx)
• Microsoft Office Excel 2007 macro-enabled template (*.xltm)
• Microsoft Office Excel 2007 add-in (*.xlam)
To open 2007 Office documents in the 2003 viewers after you install the
compatibility pack, locate the file in Windows Explorer, and then
double-click the file that you want to view.
Word Viewer 2003
To use Word Viewer to open the file, follow these steps:
1. Start Word Viewer.
2. Click File, and then click Open.
3. In the Files of type list, click All Files (*.*).
