it will speed up boot time.
it basically helps the operating system find files faster if you do a
lot of searching. it is suppose to work better, however, i find that in
many cases, it doenst really work as it should, and it still doesnt find
files that i know are there. so we all just ignore it and turn it off.

If you use the XP or Vista Search function a lot (hourly), then that one
feature is faster. Turning it off stops a background task from running.
Won't help boot time, as it doesn't load until it is booted.

Theory is..... It is used to help speed up the "windows" search
function (cataloging each file I believe to find later). I read that
disabling it should speed up the OS tho I didn't read anything about
the boot up.
Recently I disabled mine on a XP system using a core2duo chip and I
could see a slight increase in speed tho no big difference. I can't
see any difference in my boot up. I can't comment about Vista. I
wonder tho if the performance difference is greater in Vista vs XP ?
I don't agree it will speed up boot time. It is a background task the
starts after XP/Vista is loaded. How will that help boot time?

Agreed.
Also, it seems that disabling indexing/Windows search has a more pronounced
and beneficial effect in Vista versus XP to me.
Again, anecdotal - but the response times in Vista seem very much improved
after turning that service off.
