I need to get some ethernet cable for my daughter's laptop for her to
connect at the college dorm. I don't know if I should get cat5, 5e
or 6? Is the 5e and 6 backward compatible? Any suggestions? I
will probably just buy it locally to save time.

All are backward compatible. Unless the college has Gigabit LAN, very
unlikely, I wouldn't worry about what I got. CAT 5 is fine.

thank you. I ended up getting 5e because that's all I saw available.
I'm not use to wired since I do wireless in my home for about 8 years
or more.
