My apologies, but can't think of a better place to ask help! (This
does occur on my Dimension 8300). I subscribe to the NY Times Premium
Puzzle page for my husband. Have not accessed this for several months,
as I'll go in, download a bunch of puzzles and print them out for him.
Yesterday, I successfully reached the login page, but when I clicked
on puzzles/games the page started to load and then disappeared along
with the browser. Was using Firefox, but got the same result with IE.
Tried turning off firewall (Kerio), AVG free, same result. Even did a
System Restore to a time as far back as possible. From my laptop was
able to successfully reach the page, so it's not a crucial matter, but
I'm totally stumped. Have subscribed for at least 5 years with no
problems at all. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like the problem is being caused by a corrupted or
outdated component that is used by both browsers to render the page
you're trying to access. I would suggest updating anything that works
with your web browser (Flash player, Java, Adobe Reader, etc...). Then
make sure (for Firefox) that you have the latest available release.
After that, I'd try the page again and see if it works.
If that still fails, are you sure that the system is virus and spyware
free? Even with programs in place, sometimes things do slip through
before the software provider has released a set of definitions new
enough to catch the latest viruses and malicious software.
besides the other advice, also could be
hard drive failure - bad or corrupt pointers.
do a chkdsk/scandisk type repair.
also check system logs for errors.
clean out all temp files (files in temp folders)
as well as temporary internet files (both explorer and firefox)
because if the cache gets corrupt, i've seen it stop the browser cold.
you're computer is at the age that the hard drive could be starting to
fail! do you have enough free disk space?
and make sure you have backups...

Your browser may just need a fresh start. Try going to Tools > Internet
Options and deleting Cookies and Temp Files. Then close your browser and
trying again.

I've noticed similar behaviour over at http://www.theinquirer.net
since I did some tweaks to Firefox - the entire page would load and
display, then blink off in a fraction of a second.
I've installed a couple of beta versions since though and they work
fine.

Not sure but I'd clear the browser cache and reboot ?????
Thanks, all, for your replies. I've always been a demon on keeping my
machine lean and mean, run CCleaner regularly. Did do a chkdsk and all
is well. Anti-virus and anti-spyware also show no problems. Something
interesting, I can click on any URL on the Times welcoming page with
no problem, ie Books, Theater, Local news, etc, but games/crosswords
causes shutdown. I copied the URL for the puzzle "archive" which lists
all back issues, from my laptop, and lo and behold, that works!
Colin, your experience with the Inquirer address sounds identical. My
problem is the same with Firefox and Internet Explorer, however.
