Default OT but really impressed by this: HP Touchsmart system

Was at Best Buy today and they had one of HP's Touch
screen computers out

Gotta admit it was VERY nice!

Curious what faults you guys would find with an all in
one like this?

Hey!

Better wash your hands each and every time you use it!

Why do you want a touchscreen system? I wouldn't want one. Taking my
hands off the keyboard to touch the screen would take longer than just
using a mouse (or better yet my trackpoint on my laptop).

I think touchscreens can be good for business applications. For
personal applications I think they are relegated to MS One Note or
marking up Word documents (something I think I'd only do once and then
realize it's not worth it).

Apple is rumoured to be coming out with some kind of touchscreen
system. I have doubts that even Apple can come out with something
useful along those lines.

I read that Job's was promising something big for Apple like in
September or so (I forgot as I didn't read the article). And Apple's
follower's are worried about Job's health again.

Back on topic, now that I think about it, I would imagine if you don't
start out with clean fingers, your screen may not look too good later
on or you need to either keep cleaning your fingers or the screen more
often.

Does the touch screen system offer a keyboard too so you can touch or
type ?

I could see where such a unit would be very nice in a
kitchen setting mounted on the wall. Many times people
just want to look something up quickly on the Net and
then go. Touchscreen perfect for that.

The touch interface was VERY elegant and nicely done.
The screen appears to be glass and resistant to
scratches and fingerprints. You can also use the mouse
and wireless keyboard when needed..... but the touch
screen was VERY VERY nice.

It was 22" and nicely sized.... not too small and not
too big but get this.... HP did NOT include a vesa
mount on the back which means it can NOT be wall
mounted. That's a deal breaker right there I think

Yes I bought a Lenovo R61i..... 14.1" wide screen core
duo. Its a nice and well built laptop BUT it has
terrible audio and sound! Its more of a business
laptop than personal laptop.

I didn't think multi-media would be important to me but
I'm finding that it is as I like to use the laptop as
kind of a portable entertainment system playing mp3
files and such and move it around the house in doing
so. Or watch videos on it in diff rooms. Well the audio
is so terrible that it has to be turned all the way up
to hear it which I fear will harm the built in speaker.

My next laptop... will be more like the Lenovo IdeaPads
which have great speakers built in and 5 watt audio
system ( I think)

Read this as well. I wouldn't be surprised if its a
touchscreen system like HP has..... or a touch screen
slate or tablet

Yes. Conventional keyboard and mouse and can be used.
The keyboard and mouse are wireless which makes for a
nice neat cable and clutter free look. Also allows you
to tuck the keyboard and mouse away when not needed.

I think a small 14" slate or tablet built in similar
manner would be superior. That is.... put ALL the
electronics of the computer in the screen itself and
have the keyboard and mouse as separate. This way you
can use the unit as a slate....or prop up the unit and
use like small desktop.... AND also snap it all
together and take it places just like a laptop.

I don't know much about the Lenovo R's, but I have a Lenovo T61 and
love it. I agree about the sound / volume being terrible. I don't
really notice it though because I don't use the laptop for listening
to music.

You probably already know that you can use the headphone out jack
connected to external speakers.

One of the first things I did when I got the computer is upgrade it
from Vista to XP Pro. It cost about $50 for the XP install disks to
be sent to me.

Your ThinkPad R should be able to take a modular bay battery. I have
one of those in my T61 along with the extended battery and I get great
battery life, as one would expect.

Its a great little laptop and good price...very well
built. Bought it form NewEgg for $650

Sure! Or I could get external laptop speakers also.
But that defeats the purpose of being able to just take
the laptop in the other room or out on deck and be able
to watch of hear videos or music from a distance while
doing other things.

Again.... its my fault..... I could have bought the
Idea Pad which has MUCH better sound built in... I just
didn't think I would need it as much as I do!!

I will probably sell this one in time.... and go for an
IdeaPad or similar Dell with good multi-media features
