It's time for me to replace one of my 250GB internal hard drives in my
XPS 410 with a 750GB drive. 750GB seems to be the best value right
now -- 1 TB drives are a little too pricey for me.
A search on newegg.com brought up several manufacturers and drives.
I'm interested in opinions and experiences about which are good and
which to stay away from.
Following is a sampling, not a complete list of possible drives. Some
of the drives have 32MB of cache, some 16MB. The ones with 32MB of
cache seem to be about $20 more.
Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3750330NS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard
Drive - OEM. TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/3mlutj $149
HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721075KLA330 (0A35154) 750GB 7200 RPM SATA
3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM. TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/382g7q $129
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

Any I should stay away from? Any thumbs up? Any other drive you
would recommend?

If it were me (based on my research about 4 months or so ago) I'd buy
Seagate. I think they have best quality but not best price.
Probably best price and popularity goes to Western Digital.

I 2nd this notion. (Hitachi could be a 3rd choice)
I have a half dozen of the WD 750GB that have been running for a year
plus 24/7 under almost constant use. Work fine. I have four of the
Hitachi 1TB running the same and they're fine too.

I have been living in the Samsung world for about 4 years now and have
no problems at all. Just purchased a 750G Samsung my self last week
and like it. It is very quiet, quick and runs cooler than the WD and
Seagate drives I have seen.
Never had a failure in 4 years on Samsung drives (about 30).
Make sure you compare warranties as well as the quoted prices. I've
found Seagate tends to have longer warranty coverage so tends to have
higher prices. I've had good luck with Western Digital drives of
various sizes.

Thanks Tom, much appreciated. I'll narrow my choices down to the two
above. I may go with a Hitachi TB drive because I have been doing a
lot of "PVRing", and with the Olympics coming up it will be nice to
have a larger drive.
You've pretty well covered the bases of what's available. I have a
750GB Western Digital drive that I transplanted from its My Book
enclosure to one with a fan. (The My Book enclosure is convection
cooled--no fan--and under heavy access it would get hot enough to
concern me.) I back computers up to it and have had no problems.
The Samsung drives aren't as well known as Seagate, WD or Hitachi, but
they are very good. I have Samsung drives from 3GB (yes, 3) to 250GB
in size and have been satisfied with all of them. The later models are
very quiet and fast.

Samsung drives have also been getting pretty good testimonials here in
Oz (in aus.computers for example) in recent months.
