I think Yes. Mel, I don't use this software so I'm just guessing here
but I'm thinking they updated the free version.
I agree, uninstall, download, and reinstall. I think it's gone funky.
I run avira free on three machines and I've had no problems, including
updating, often supplementing the auto update with a manual one.

Same exact problem on an AVG machine (down to the error message). I
wonder if they use some 3rd party license manager that had issuesz.
