Default OT--Avira Update Problem

Howdy. A friend of mine has the free version of Avira.

All of a sudden, an attempted update yields the error message to the effect
that:

no valid license file available

Any idea what is going on?

Should he just remove the program and re-d/l it?

Mel

I think Yes. Mel, I don't use this software so I'm just guessing here
but I'm thinking they updated the free version.

I agree, uninstall, download, and reinstall. I think it's gone funky.

I run avira free on three machines and I've had no problems, including
updating, often supplementing the auto update with a manual one.

Here's what help says:

Program version 9.0.0.403 6/3/2009

There are a bunch more versioned components listed, the most recently
updated being:

Virus definition file 7.01.04.180 7/3/2009

Same exact problem on an AVG machine (down to the error message). I
wonder if they use some 3rd party license manager that had issuesz.
