I have this GX110. It has an 800 MHZ Pentium III processor. I have a 1-gig
PIII processor. Wondering if the 1 gig will work in place of the
800 MHZ before I tear into the Optiplex to swap it.
The answer is a definite maybe. It depends which 1GHz CPU you have.
First, I checked the Dell web site. I am assuming that you have the Socket 370
version of the GX110. It has an Intel 810E motherboard chipset, which typically
lack support for the low voltage Tualatin Socket 370 CPUs in any systems I've
ever seen. So let's assume that you are limited to a higher voltage Socket 370
CPU.
IIRC, the higher voltage ones operate at a voltage no lower than 1.65v, or is it
1.6v? Anyway, it is NOT the 1.4 or 1.45v operating voltage of the Tualatins.
If your 1GHz CPU is a higher voltage one with the same appearance as the 800MHz
CPU, you should be OK. The operating voltages are always marked on Intel Socket
370 CPUs.
You can also install a fast higher voltage Celeron CPU as a replacement, but it
probably won't do much because the Celerons all have smaller caches and slower
100MHz front side bus compared to the 133MHz FSB P3s... Ben Myers

Well, thanks for that!! I swapped it in and it does work. Runs Windows 2K
just fine. Guess I'll leave it in there. The computer is for my 11 year
old grandson. The CPU I took out was a 1.7V and the one I put in is a
1.75V. The motherboard is made by Asus.
Thanks

It worked because the CPU voltages are a near-match... Ben Myers
