Default Oakland County Michigan goes wireless

Oakland County Michigan goes wireless next week.

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with WinME installed and it does
everything I need it to.

The county says I need a wi-fi (802.11b/g) card to go wireless. I have
3 slots left.
By the way the machine is in the basement.
Is there anything else I need to go wireless and does Dell sell it?
Is there anything else I need to know?
Please keep it simple.
Thanks for your time.

Try the card first and see if it can detect the wireless network. If
not, maybe you need a wireless antenna? Please let us know what works
for you as I'm also near a city going wireless soon and may need to
use your solution.

You might also want to talk to neighbors and see what they try /
recommend.

The basement might be a challenge. A USB wireless would normally be my
recommendation, but you only have USB1.1 and most newer cards are USB2.

A PCI card would work, but you're going to need an extension cable and
an external antenna.

I would probably go with this antenna:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127050

and this wireless card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124115

I believe the connectors should match up. You'll need the smaller
connector on the antenna and the bigger one should just unscrew.

I may have mislead you when I said wireless antenna. What I meant
earlier was it finds wireless networks but actually it hooks up to
your card with a cable. I don't know whether an indoor antenna would
work but if it were me, I'd probably go with the outdoor antenna
unless your neighbors tell you otherwise or you can try it and return
it if no good. Should you use the outdoor antenna, read the
instructions to make sure it's grounded.

All the neighbors use WOW or Comcast cable.
An out door antenna is no problem as I am an Amateur Radio Operator.
I have a 40 ft tower and a set of rotatable beams in the back yard
plus a Dish for Directv.
I'm just not real knowledgable about computers ect.

helmsman,
If you have access to a laptop or have another PC on the main floor of your
home.
1. Consider buying a wireless router. (around $50.00). Provides some
firewall protection.
2. Connect it to your laptop or other PC, by Ethernet cables to the router.
3. Then set up the router, as an access point.
4. Run the setup for the connection to the wireless system.
5. Then set up the basement pc to pick up the signal from the router,
instead of directly from the service.
6. You may need to move the router around the house so that your basement pc
can find the signal. A laptop connected to router would make that easier, if
you have to make any adjustments to the router's settings.

This might be something you might consider, before using this service:

http://www.michtel.com/security.htm

"In order to make Wireless Oakland easily accessible to a large number of
WiFi enabled devices, the network is an open-access wireless network.
Wireless Oakland's free internet connections are not encrypted from your
computer to the access point in your neighborhood. This means your
information could be intercepted in transit if it is not encrypted by a
technology such as SSL. If you choose to upgrade, paid internet access will
be encrypted and security provided from the wireless access device to the
network."

I've used WinMe with a USB wireless adapter (Netgear). It was finicky but
it worked. Sometimes it would drop connection but either rebooting the
system or unplugging the USB antenna and re-plugging resulted in immediate
re-connection.

------------

Of course it does. What led you to believe that it did not? Might have
to get an older card, but it would work.

I put in a D-Link WDA 1320 wireless card in my Dell 4100 and installed
the software. I couldn't even get the icon to trigger the software.
And all I can find on the machine is (dial-up networking). On top of
that it didn't even cause plug n play to find it.
