no internet connection after fresh install from xp reinstallation cd
I have performed a fresh install on my old dell latitude d600 using a
reinstall XP CD (which came with my new dell latitude d620) back to
factory settings. Now I am unable to connect to the internet. Try to
bring up IE and get the page not found message.
After I did the clean install, I did not also install all the drivers
for my hardware? - why? - because I don't know which ones to install.
I can see drivers available for my laptop at Dell Support site but
don't know which ones I need to load.
Reading other threads on MS forums, to find out what hardware is on my
computer, I downloaded, installed and ran the free Belarc Advisor -
but was not sure what I was looking at in the report?. I could't see
anything in there under 'hardware'.
So I tried to find out by opening Device Manager, and under 'Other
Devices' there are 6 entries (with yellow ?
and ! marks against them):
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Control
Network Controller
O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader
PCI Modem
Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
Then, when I right-click properties on any one of them, e.g.
'Ethernet
Controller', I get the following information under the 'General' tab:
Device type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown.
There is also other information under the 'Details' tab, such as
'Device Instance ID'.
QUESTION: how do I find out, from this info, or the Balarc Advisor
report, what drivers are required, in order that I may download them
from dell support?
Also, I don't have any original Inspiron utility CDrom for either Dell
laptop.
HELP! - Many thanks in advance.

2) Video adapter driver - (*Your system has either Intel integrated video or
an ATI adapter. Intel chipset drivers should install the Intel video adapter
drivers. If you still have a video "!" or "?" after the chipset install,
then proceed to install video drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.)
3) Chipset drivers for the O2 smartcard
4) Network driver - Broadcom 570x
5) Communication driver - Conexant D480 MDC V.92 driver
6) Audio driver - Sigmatel STAC 9750 AC97 driver.
^^^This isn't a perfect formula but is a decent and general start. You may
have to add some other downloads once these are completed. ^^^^
Re: no internet connection after fresh install from xp reinstallation cd
Stew modestly states that the driver installation order is not a perfect
solution, but it would work for me. I do exactly the same thing when
confronted with a Windows reinstall and no driver CD for whatever brand of
computer I am working on.
I cannot emphasize the importance of installing the motherboard chipset drivers
absolutely first. Doing the driver install in any other order can result in a
serious waste of time... Ben Myers

I generaly agree with this
always install the motherboard/chipset drivers first
then do the drivers for the rest, graphics card, modems, network cards etc

many thanks to you all for taking the time and effort to provide some
answers. stew, thanks especially for providing the ordered drivers
list, very useful for a non-techie numpty like myself. unfortunately,
following the initial suggestion to load drivers, i did just that,
loading high priority ones first (which doesnt include the intel
chipset one). the laptop can now connect to the internet, although
judging by the comments, as i havent loaded the drivers in the correct
order, i can expect to hear a large twang again in the future.
regards, jod.

Jod -
Check device manager (which I'm sure you already have). If it's clean, then
I wouldn't worry about it.
Following the install priority list is not something set in stone; it is a
preferred method in hopes of avoiding unwanted problems or surprises.
If device manager is clean, then hopefully you should be good to go.
