Default Need a recommendation ....

My son has three desktops (wired) and two laptops (wireless) on his network
at home plus a networkable printer (with an Ethernet connection but no
available jack). Due to the lack of network jacks his printer is connected
to one of his desktops and shared which means that desktop has to be on
24/7. His router is on the second floor and the wireless signal downstairs
is a bit weak.

I am looking for the simplest possible setup that will allow the printer to
be connected to the network - not shared on a desktop plus a stronger
wireless signal downstairs. He has two wireless routers ( one G and one B).
He is willing to add any networking devices required.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx

A wireless print server ???? I wanted to eliminate the need for my
spare home network pc to always be on (printer was wired to pc) so I
decided upon a wireless print server. It works fine except there is a
slight delay to begin printing something over the network (patience is
a virtue which I have to remind myself each time).

Not sure about the signal aspect but you could try to have the printer
closer to the router and if this is impractical, look at the bright
side, it will make all of you walk more so you won't have to exercise
as much separately <g>. I also had a weak signal on my wireless
network which was solved a lot by simply raising the height of my
router (my "g" router is on the first floor of my 2 story home with
networked pc/laptops on each floor; all are wireless). Check with
some others here who probably know ways to increase the wireless
signal (hardware) or check google for increasing the wireless router
signals. Something in the back of my head says "repeaters" but I know
little of this and would have to re-educate myself on this stuff.

Well, a simple and cheap 4-port network hub (Linksys, Netgear, D-Link) would
help, wouldn't it? Or am I missing something here? ... Ben Myers

you are saying that you have a wireless router that has only three network
jacks for the lan? i never heard of any model like that. something is
missing from this story. what model router does he have?

i bet what you didn't say was that you don't have a spare cable runs between
the first and second floor for the printer. so you do have enough lan ports
in the router for the three wired comptuers and one wired printer but you
just don't have the necessary cable between the first and second floor to
dedicate to the printer. two possible solutions: 1) rewire one of the
cables between the first and second floor to make a single full duplex/8
wire/4 pair jack into two half duplex/4 wire/2 pair jacks. 2) use a network
switch on the first floor to plug one of the current computers into along
with the printer and then get a cable to go between the switch and the wall
jack.

Well, unless I misunderstand - I'd just place a PCI wireless card in one of
the desktops and connect the printer to that port in the router.

If you don't need a network jack to connect it to, it will work. He
said there were no network jacks available so I thought a wireless
print server would be ideal except it is dependent on signal and not
sure about the cost vs. a hub. Maybe I don't understand.

Only three network "wall jacks" - one for each desktop. Each router has
four wired connections.

Definitely an option.

The cable internet service comes into the house upstairs into a wireless
router that connects (via Cat 6) the three desktop computers downstairs to
the internet. The printer is also downstairs. I guess I can connect the
second wireless router to one of the Ethernet wall acks downstairs and then
a desktop and the network printer to the that router. That should also
improve the wireless signal. Does that make sense? Will it work?
