Default Memory for XPS 600

Crucial says that the max for XP 32 bit is 2gb.

Is this really true? I am editing some very large
scans in Photoshop, and want to add more memory.
Would Photoshop be able to use it?

Here is what Crucial said:

* Maximum Memory: 8192MB
* USB Support: 2.x Compliant
* Standard Memory: 512MB removable
* Slots: 4 (2 banks of 2)
* Graphics Support: Dual PCI Express x16
* Maximum memory depends on the installed operating system. 8GB maximum for Windows XP 64bit based systems and 2GB for Windows XP 32bit based systems.

Default Max Memory for XPS 600

Subject restated.

I think I found the answer on the Dell Forum. There is something
off in the chipset the XPS 600 uses that prevents 32 bit XP Pro from
using more than 2gb. An alleged MS employee says that XP SP3 will
provide a workaround, so that the /3gb switch will work, and of 4 gig
of physical memory, the OS will use 1 gig, and provide 3 gig to applications.

The threads were rather convoluted, but the ones that tried to install more
than 2 gig could not get the OS to recognize it, even though the BIOS did.
Some reported a message in the BIOS Log that it was downsizing memory.

If anyone has better information I would love it, as I know Photoshop CS2
can use the 3 gig, and I am using a lot of temp file space with my large
scans, and only getting 50-70% efficiency as reported by PSCS2.

Photoshop can use up to 3GB with the proper configuration and XP SP2.
More than that, you're looking at Win XP 64.

Just curious, how big are your scans? I've been using PS in 1Gb with 12mp
digital images, usually editing more than one at a time and it was fine. I
upgraded to 3GB, but didn't notice any real performance difference.

Yes, but the XPS 600 cannot use more than 2gig, at least according to a
number of users posting on the Dell forums.

I was getting about 50% efficiency as reported by PS. The books I have read
say that when you drop below 100 the difference is noticeable. I cannot really
tell, as when I am working on smaller images and have 100% it is faster, but
the images are smaller.

The memory has gotten cheap and I was about to buy some from crucial when
I saw their comment about the XPS 600 and its 2 gig limit on 32 bit XP.

Mine are around 60mb. I'll be interesting in hearing your experience.
