Default laptop screen size

I am considering purchasing a laptop and noticed that I very much like
the display on a screen that measured 12" wide, 9" high, 15" diagonally
on an HP laptop. (I measured the screen using a measuring tape.) I
tested a Gateway with a screen that was approximately one inch wider,
and one inch lower (more rectangular than the HP). Which Dell laptops
have a square (or less rectangular) dimension? Can I get them with the
minimum 12" wide, 9" high, 15" diagonal dimensions? Can they get bigger
than that (while maintaining the squarish foot print)?

Screens come in two configurations. The standard aspect, the "square" type
like your standard television, or the widescreen aspect or more
"rectangular" like a big screen television or the screen down at your local
movie theater. Dell laptops can be ordered, depending on the specific
model, in both screen types. Some models are only available in a widescreen
version. Generally, the models aimed at consumers are more media and
entertainment specific, so are usually only offered in the widescreen
version. Business models are usually, but not always, only offered in the
standard screen version.

I called Dell yesterday and spoke to a sales rep about this and he swore
up and down that Dell only carries the rectangular screens. (He
initially also swore that I couldn't get XP until I pressed the issue
then he changed his story and said that I had to wait until June 18th
for that.)
This sales rep may have been from the consumer side. I will call back
and make sure I speak to a business sales rep to check if they offer the
rectangular screens.

i also think they phased out most of the non-wide screens on laptops.
the only exception is the latitude d520/d530 maybe....

You will do much better, get better service, more competent personnel, and a
wider range of options if you contact Dell's Small Business unit, rather than
the Comsumer schlockmeisters.

Keep in mind when buying a laptop EXACTLY how portable it will be. It gets real
old real fast to carry around a 17" "desktop replacement" every day. For
frequent travel out and about, I like my older IBM Thinkpad X30 with a 12" sharp
LCD screen. Dell makes/made similar models, weighing less than 4 pounds. Even
when packed with the docking station (with CD-RW drive), power supply and
assorted network troubleshooting hardware, the system weighs well under 10
pounds. The big 17" ones often start at 10 pounds for the system unit alone...

I think Jay's right. The only standard-aspect Dell that I know of
from the Latitude line is the D530.

I need at least a 15" screen, if not bigger. (I am considering a
desktop with a good flat screen as an alternative.)

Well I was asking Ben actually... but have you considered a laptop with
an external monitor and perhaps an external keyboard and mouse (like
what I do)?
