Default Laptop, notebook etc?

Hi, I have $350-400 to spend on a portable, a laptop or a notebook .
Any one more particularly suited for my needs or just different names?

1 It will probably never leave the house but will be used in the
evenings when I'm in my big daddy's chair, or sitting up in bed and
be plugged in as opposed to using the battery

2 I can hear a million comments about how much I can spend.

3 ANY brand would do, but their is a little Dell 620 ...small
keyboard, small screen, $329. Other than that?

4 The Dell Dimension 2400 I have now is about to receive extreme
unction!!!

Help please?

Mikie

I purchased for a friend a Inspiron 15 (1545) for $489 (before tax) at
the outlet. 15.6 inch screen. They have a Celeron version for $359.
Maybe at some point you could install a Core2Duo. I wanted a Core2
just to run better over the next couple of years. The scratch and
dents are a good deal.

I got a friend a 620 with a 1.8 Dual Core and it works OK although he
says it is slower than what he wants. He also said the screen seemed
dimmer than what he liked. I have purchased a bunch of Dell's in the
past and I have been very satisfied. I just mention this case related
to the 620.

If you are going with XP then any 1-2GB notebook would do. However,
if you think you will want to jump to Windows 7 (or Vista) make sure
the computer can handle it. I have a Dell D600 that is my current
machine that works well for me (with XP) but there is no video driver
for Windows7. It works good in 7 but it is using the 'standard VGA
driver' that may not make it efficient.

I live in Austin, Texas but for the last several months I have been in
Germany so I couldn't take advantage of Craigslist which I think is
great for my friend.

I wouldn't buy my mother-in-law a Celeron or Sempron system.

I don't think you will get XP included for $329!
The 1545 I got was less than $400 but came with Ubuntu (Dual-core,160G,
2G,LED-lit)
Anyway, I'm happy with it!

The one I got was a Core 2 Duo which is different than the dual core.
dual cores don't seem to be very well regarded.

The only reason I mentioned the Celeron was that I assumed that the
system is the same except for the processor. If you are on the cheap
maybe you could buy this low end one and in the future when you can
afford it is swap out the CPU.
