Default Laptop to Desktop?

The Dell catalog lists a Belkin expresscard adapter for (I guess) mouse
and monitor.

Is the monitor image the same as the laptop image, as to shape and
resolution? I'm not sure how it's supposed to work.

Is it supported by some standard XP software? It claims not to need
any additional software. But I suppose it wouldn't work on Linux,
if I boot that instead?

How is it different from just plugging a monitor into the video out
and a mouse to the USB jack? I assume something like that already
works, but am not sure again what the situation is in recognizing the
mouse and using it instead of the onboard touchpad.
