Default Killed my I6000 dead

Guess I shouldn't try to fix things.

I had an Inspiron 6000 that had a broken power connector. Bought a new
connector, took the machine apart, soldered on the new connector, put it
back together.

When I press the power button, the lights come on for 2-3 seconds and
then shuts back down.

Disassembled and checked everything and put it back together.

Same problem.

Swapped memory (the obvious).

Same problem.

Any thoughts?

Tom

Possibly shorted out something on the main board? Bummer. Check the
connections to and from the Power Button itself. Maybe something has mucked
that end up.

Yeah, I thought of that. I'm surprised that it would even power on
though, if that was the case, since all I soldered was the power
connector -- which does seem to be fixed!

Tom, with all due respect, I think this supports your need for another
laptop or laptop replacement !! No I'm not trying to be cute here
just trying to use some logic, that's all.

Trying to get back on topic: I'm not familiar with the I6000 but I
wonder if there could be a capacitor or fuse that is blowing?
Otherwise I'm at a loss to explain it unless you disturbed another
part in the process for this fix.

thermal damage to nearby components (especially surface-mount) from
soldering? a dry joint caused by physical stress of installing new
power socket - could it have cracked a trace? possible short due to a
stray solder trace? I'm assuming the socket was soldered with correct
pinouts etc.
Try with opticals, battery and HDD removed as a longshot, to remove
them from the equation...as a last resort, strip the laptop as much as
possible, and power it up whilst manipulating the casing/components to
try and find a bad connection.

I tried all those things and no go. I'm pretty sure the connections are
good. I used a cold soldering iron to minimize extraneous heat,
but.......

Ah well, an excuse for a new laptop.

Yeah!

I managed to fix it. Took it apart again (for the third time) and
realized that I had not tightened the screw that holds down the CPU.
How stupid!

It has a dead hard drive, but I swapped drives and it boots.

Darn, no new laptop

And why should that stop you from buying a new laptop?

The I6000 already died once, so you need a backup/spare right?

You mean how it's managed to decimate my 401K?

Aside from that, it's our duty as good ol' Americans to help stimulate the
economy by spending what little money we have left in hopes it will cause
the market to go back up where it once was.

right???
