Default Inspiron 8200 internet problem

I have just formatted my 8200 and reinstalled xp. I have done this many
times and followed my normal procedure.
Now i can't get on the internet using my usb modem which is an alcatel
speedtouch 330. Drivers appear to load ok and device manager says it is
working ok ,it also
syncs ok as the 2 green lights come on on my modem and the green light on
the desktop but when i try to logon it just hangs at verify username and
password then faults out. Passwords and settings are correct. I have noticed
that as well as loading it as a modem it also loads the modem under network
connections as well. I don't appear to have done anything different to
normal but it just won't connect. Any ideas?.

Andy.

Was it plugged in _before_ you installed the drivers ? (Speedtouch
330's are known to be consumer-hostile, in that sometimes the only way
to get them working if you mistakenly plugged it in first is by wiping
the machine and starting again)

Further to my other answer (which i'd already made in a different
group in regards this problem to you the other day), the best solution
is to buy a router, and forget the Speedtouch - it's garbage.

The annoying thing is that i did install the drivers first and follow the
same routine as normal. I have done this a few times. What seems different
is that it also installs the modem under network adapters and in one of the
settings it describes it as usb adsl ppp where i'm sure it was pppoa before.
does this mean anything?.

I'll be honest, it's been about 4 years since I last had the
misfortune to play with one of these - I did what others suggested and
got a router, and quickly forgot about the **** things !

Where abouts are you in the UK ? - if you're anywhere near Merseyside,
i've actually got two routers going spare at the moment:

a) BT Voyager 2100 (IIRC) lan/wireless - got it 2nd hand from someone,
and was in use over the last few months connected via LAN. It has a
wireless facility, but they had problems with it, but they were
surrounded by DECT phones which can affect the signal

b) a no-name Ebuyer special ("Aceex") that hasn't ever let me down -
this is the one I bought about 4 years ago
