I am ordering a new laptop & would appreciate info on new INTEL Next
Gen Wireless N addon, as opposed to the intel Pro 3945.
Dell help suggests faster speed/longer range to existing G home
network.
Are there any issues with existing wireless networks that Dell dosent
mention. The N card is only $10 more, so sees like cheap future
proofing, but don't want to sacrifice compatibility.

Get the G card (the 3945) and grab an N card down the road once all of the
kinks are worked out. People whom I respect here have mentioned that N is
still pre-standard and you might have some issues with it.
Plus....gotta figure an N card will be $50 or less whenever it becomes
standard in the next 24/36 months or however long it takes.
The so-called N card is really a pre-N card, because there is no formal approved
802.11n standard. You have no guarantee that a pre-N card will work with
industry standard 802.11n gear, or with a brand other than its own.
Dell help is a lot of bull**** here. A pre-N card will run no faster than an
802.11g card on an existing 802.11g network and router. Without industry
standard equipment, you are wasting $10, but the card will probably be no better
and no worse than an 802.11g card. And you may have a throwawy on your hands
if and when you upgrade to a standard 802.11n router. Well, at least it's only
$10. I went to the MicroCenter store in Cambridge MA today, and like most
other stores selling wifi gear, they were selling a Linksys 802.11g router for
$49 after rebate and a Linksys so-called 802.11n router for $129. I am sure
suckers buy the Linksys pre-N stuff... Ben Myers

I have to agree with Stew and Ben's reply.
For now, stay with the G card/network.

Honestly, for $10, I'd get the pre-n. What do you have to lose? If you
recall the pre-g days, the major manufacturers DID offer firmware
updates to the final version.
G-rated, instead of PG? The mfrs offered firmware upgrades from pre-G to G when
it was technically possible... Ben

From what I read in the past, the pre N will not be likely a N card
later and compatibility is an issue too. If this is true, why spend
the $10 more but if all this is NOT true, sure spend the extra $10.
The $10 is better spent on a couple of beers or going to a movie. Not sure if
it is better off used to light a cigar though... Ben Myers

Right now, going to wireless N isn't future proofing. The standard has
not been finalized. Meaning there's a high chance that your wireless
card won't be compatible with equipment purchased after the
finalization. At least not in full N mode.
