I've had 7 of these in the past 18 days and don't like it at all. I take
"iastor0" to be my boot drive, which is a 500GB Seagate HDD. The boot
time diagnostics say everything is good. I've downloaded Seagate's
diagnostics and will kick them off later today before I head out. Should
I replace this drive before it bites me on the backside?

why not run spinrite... (grc.com)
it will diagnose and fix any defects, and will tell you if the drive is
near death.
better than any other diag.

I second the recommendation for SpinRite, although it has a price tag.
Before spending any money, though, I'd make sure that your drivers are up to
date. I've come to the conclusion that the IaStor drivers are not the best
engineered thing out there.

As a low-cost alternative to Spinrite, may I suggest HDA2? It is free, even.
Use it to examine the SMART attributes, which will tell you the operational
history of the drive... Ben Myers

I've downloaded HDAT2 but can't find instructions on how to run it?

Update: I ran SeaTools extended tests and the HDD passed - not a single
hiccup.
I really do not like taking hits on my boot drive, which happens only on
the XPS410, same drives.

Good idea, so I downloaded it, built the floppy and ran it. With the
SCSI drivers included, the only PCI device it found was the floppy.
Other devices resulted in:
[0/0 FE00h / FE12h / 0Aj
Error reading of the Identify Device data
ATA Error FFh media error/time limit out
disabled or not present
It did the same for 0/1, 1/0 & 1/1.
I tried HDAT2 on my XPS720 and it found the HDDs. However, it ran bog
slow & issued "device hung, reset required". I hit ESC to abort the test
and it reported that it had found 4 bad sectors (of 4 sectors tested).
Dell's BIOS hard drive found nothing wrong and XP Pro booted normally.
HDA2 probably does not coexist well with whatever disk controller chip is in the
XP720. In my experience, it seems to work OK with all the common controller
chips found on desktops and also selected and older server controller chips. For
HDA2 to work right with the XPS720 disk controller, it would need a DOS-mode
driver. The odds of that happening are probably one in a zillion... Ben Myers
