Default Errors in Media Card Reader in Inspiron 530

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 purchased new May 2008 with the factory-
installed SM/xD/SD/MS card reader. On 10/27 I received 3 updates from
Microsoft Update which were:

Platform update for Windows Vista KB971644
Update for Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows
Vista KB975364
Update for Windows Vista KB972145

After receiving these updates, I get 4 error messages (1 for each
device) each time I boot up saying that I need to reinstall it's
driver. I am given options to "search automatically for updated driver
software" or "browse my computer for driver software", but both
options fail with a message saying "Windows found driver software for
your device but encountered an error while trying to install it.
Access is denied". (I am logged on as administrator, in case that
matters).

The xD reader is the only one I use and it still appears to be
operational, but I don't know about the others. I'd like to either
solve or get rid of the error message and the notification in Device
Manager that there is a problem. Any assistance is appreciated.

Windows driver updates are known to usually cause more harm than good.
Under the Device Manager should allow you to restore the original
drivers. If that fails, the Dell disc should have them.

Agreed. A month or so, somebody took me apart in this newsgroup for
making the same statement. After a number of years, Windows Update for
Microsoft's own software has become pretty dependable, but who knows
what they do to the hardware drivers on their update web site.

I will confess to having recently had one successful hardware driver
update. Set up a Dell system from scratch, forgot to put the nVidia
drivers on the memory stick I use to install drivers. Went to Windows
Update and it found the nVidia driver for the video card. The update
went successfully. Of course, I had nothing to lose, because I had not
installed the drivers to begin with... Ben Myers

I am well aware of the pitfalls of getting driver updates from
Microsoft Update...but these were not described as such, and since
I've had no other issues with Microsoft update I just let it do it's
thing. Looks like from now on I'll have to research each update before
allowing it to proceed.

Can you tell us which Microsoft update was not labeled as a 'driver'
update.

Like Ben, I never use Microsoft driver updates, but I will use the
drivers that are included in the SP packages, when in a pinch. For
instance, I set up an older pc a month ago with XP SP1a, and couldn't
find the sound or video drivers for Creative or Turtle beach. When I
installed SP3, all worked fine.

Let me rephrase that last paragraph... Sometimes the SP packages solve
my driver issues.

If and when I need a driver unavailable from the Dell (or other
name-brand computer assembler) web site, I invariably go to the web site
of the hardware manufacturer... Ben Myers

These are the updates as listed in my original post:

Platform update for Windows Vista KB971644
Update for Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows
Vista KB975364
Update for Windows Vista KB972145

There is no mention that any of them was a "driver" update.
