Default DVD burner for Latitude D600 - Recommendations

I would like to get a DVD burner for my laptop, but would prefer not
to get one from Dell. Anyone have a suggestion on a good branded slim
burner that would fit my notebook.

TIA, you guys have always been very helpful!

Best,
Lisa

What have you heard about Dell's DVD burners, and which
burner(s) have you heard about?

Installing a DVD burner in a Dell laptop can be problematic if it is not
manufactured for that specific model or model family, to be more accurate. What
you need to do is match up the front plasic bezel with the bezel on the drive in
your D600 right now.

It seems that nearly all the laptop manufacturers use proprietary plastic
bezels, which are designed to conform to the overall shape of the computer. Some
bezels are larger than others, either wider or higher.

The bottom line is that you are best off with a DVD burner made specifically for
the D600 and similar models. There are reputable sellers on eBay who sell Dell
parts for a lot less than Dell. That is your most likely choice for buying.
Searching around locally either via CL or by calling local computer repair
places is a needle in a haystack... Ben Myers

A long time ago (Inspiron 4000 / 4100 days) companies other than Dell
sold modules for the modular bay, but I haven't seen that for a while.
I would just go with what Dell offers. Oh -- I did see one on Craig's
List just the other day -- look at the Computer section for Madison,
WI. If I can find it I'll paste a link.

I forgot to say the most obvious -- you might be able to get one on
ebay for a good price.

Found what I had remembered, but it's a DVD-ROM D-series module ($20).
You wanted a burner however and it's only ROM.

Someone was selling an Inspiron 600m for parts for $150. You might be
able to talk the person down a lot:

It might have a DVD burner. I'd offer $50 to start, for the DVD RW if
available, power supply, and extra battery the person mentions. Then
go up to $75 "take it or leave it" to see if s/he bites.

Thanks Ben,

Your advice, as always, is right on the money.

I'm alittle afraid of a bad ebay experience. Might you recommend one
or more ebay sellers that are reputable? You may reply directly to me
if you would prefer, and I'll post my experiences (hopefully good) on
this list for others as well.

Lisa,

I buy and sell some stuff on eBay. Most of the time when I am shopping for very
specific parts (e.g. Dell spares), which I do on occasion, I look for sellers
with a large number of sales and a near-100% record of positive feedback. I
also look for a good quality large photo, so I can see better what I am buying.

For example, I've bought replacement LCD screens and motherboards for laptops,
and gotten something that works well.

Once in a while, I get less than I paid for, but it is usually when I go hunting
for bargains. And, sometimes, a bargain buy works out well, when I get over
$100 of parts for maybe $10 because the seller does not quite know what he has
got... Ben

Yes, it definitely is a needle in a haystack but the modular DVD I saw
on Craig's List came **** close. Too bad it was only a burner.

lisa, it was not said what your objective was in getting a dvd drive, to
copy things or to back stuff up.... but either way i wonder if a dvd record
drive would really be appropriate for your particular machine. machines of
your vintage typically came with 30gb hard drives. a dvd burner can hold
nearly 5gb and needs working space of the about the same to work. so i
wonder if you even have hard disk capacity to use a dvd bruner with your
machine.
an internal dvdrw drive for your latitude d600 appear to sell for between
$60-$70 on ebay and are very easy to install as a substitute to the existing
internal drive as detailed here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...es.htm#1019383
a internal recordable cd drive that hold 700mb cost about $25 on ebay and
may be good enough for your needs.
those are my thoughts... probably leaves you more questions than answers.
